Discover Mcgill's Restaurant & Saloon

Tucked away in the heart of Gallatin Gateway, Montana, Mcgill's Restaurant & Saloon at 205 Buffalo Horn Creek Rd, Gallatin Gateway, MT 59730, United States, is the kind of place that captures the essence of Western charm and hearty mountain hospitality. From the moment you step inside, the rustic wooden beams, soft amber lighting, and friendly laughter filling the air make you feel like you’ve found a hidden gem locals have known about for years.

On my last visit, it was the aroma that hit me first-the savory scent of grilled bison burgers sizzling over an open flame and freshly baked bread drifting from the kitchen. The menu here isn’t just extensive; it’s thoughtfully crafted to blend Montana’s rugged flavors with a touch of sophistication. From hand-cut steaks to trout caught from local streams, every dish seems to tell a story about the land and the people who make it. The chef’s signature ribs, slow-cooked until they fall off the bone, have earned rave reviews not only from travelers but also from locals who’ve made this their go-to spot for celebrations.

Dining here feels like being part of a community. The servers greet guests by name, and the bartender remembers your favorite drink even if you’ve only been there once or twice. During my dinner, I chatted with a couple from Bozeman who said they drive nearly an hour just for McGill’s classic Montana prime rib. “It’s worth every mile,” they said with a grin, and honestly, I couldn’t agree more.

The saloon adds an extra layer of experience. With its well-stocked bar featuring regional craft beers, Montana whiskeys, and house-made cocktails, it’s easy to lose track of time. One Friday evening, I attended their live music night where a local bluegrass band played by the fireplace. The combination of good food, great music, and friendly faces made the night unforgettable. According to recent travel reviews, McGill’s is often rated among the top dining destinations in the region, especially praised for its family-friendly atmosphere and authentic local flavor.

What makes the restaurant stand out isn’t just the food-it’s the consistency. In hospitality research conducted by the National Restaurant Association, consistency in service and flavor ranks among the top reasons guests return to an establishment. McGill’s exemplifies that principle perfectly. Every plate feels like it’s been made with care, and even when the dining room is packed during ski season, the service never falters.

The staff shared a bit about their sourcing approach, too. Ingredients are locally supplied whenever possible-beef from nearby ranches, vegetables from regional farms, and trout from Montana’s pristine waterways. This commitment to local sustainability isn’t just admirable; it enhances the taste of every meal. As someone who’s dined at various Montana eateries, I can confidently say McGill’s captures the soul of Big Sky Country on a plate.

Even beyond the menu, the location itself adds to the experience. Nestled against the backdrop of the Spanish Peaks, the view from the restaurant’s patio is breathtaking, especially at sunset when the sky glows in shades of gold and lavender. It’s no wonder many guests linger long after their meals, sipping coffee or a glass of wine while soaking in the scenery.

While no restaurant is perfect, the only challenge here might be securing a table on busy weekends-reservations are highly recommended. But that small inconvenience feels trivial once you’re seated and greeted with a warm smile and a fresh basket of bread.

If you’re ever near Gallatin Gateway or exploring the Yellowstone area, this restaurant is more than worth a stop. Whether you’re after a casual lunch, a romantic dinner, or a lively evening with friends, McGill’s blends all those experiences into one memorable visit. It’s a rare find where tradition meets authenticity, proving that good food and genuine hospitality never go out of style.

  • We came here for my buddy's bachelor party. We were treated exceptionally well. Our server, Will, was incredible and attentive. The food was excellent. Most notable in my opinion was the trout. It was incredibly fresh and delicate. The skin was crispy and the fish was tender. The drinks were also top notch. Everything about the place was awesome. We even went outside and played some wiffle ball in front of the teepee . It was extremely relaxed and overall a great time. I would like to stay here in the future, the grounds were stunning.

  • We stayed at the 320 Ranch in May for a week. We love it there.. expecially McGill's Restaurant & Saloon! We ate breakfast and dinner there. Both were fresh and delicious!! I think by the time we left, we had tried everything on the menu! Great food, great folks. We'll be back!!

  • During an unplanned stay in Bozeman, I had the opportunity to check out the 320 Guest Ranch and McGill’s Restaurant and Saloon. They provided us with a deck of cards from the front desk and we took time to relax and enjoy the warm atmosphere. We drank unique and tasty drinks from bartender Matt. Made fools of ourselves getting every last bit of one of the best appetizers I’ve EVER had, the 320 Game and Mushrooms! Pro-tip; save any of the leftover gravy for dipping your fries into! I had fries to do this with from my Bison Rueben sandwich! The Bison on this was perfectly seasoned! Ended out sharing an order of their apple empanadas and ice cream ie., eating grandma’s apple pie in a pocket! Yum! Josh, you are an excellent chef! Will I be back? Yes, with family next time to share this amazing place with!

  • We've been in the Big Sky area for a week and have eaten out just about every night, and the food at McGill's was head and shoulders above everyone else. The trout was excellent, the 22 oz ribeye was FANTASTIC, and the bone marrow appetizer was superb. Service was good, the prices were very reasonable - especially for this area - and we liked the decor and atmosphere, too.

  • Nice place of the beaten path. The food was absolutely delicious. Trout cakes, game appetizer, elk and pork chop did not disappoint. Add the bread pudding as a dinner - you won’t regret it. On the improvement list - service seemed rather “annoyed “ by our request to not be seated in the kitchen doorway despite more than half the restaurant being empty. Music was playing way too loud through the first part of the dinner taking a bit away from the atmosphere. In general- go for the food but don’t expect a very cozy atmosphere as some pictures would suggest. Room needs some modifications to become a more “cozy” charming character.

  • McGill's is always a delightful treat! They offer a seasonally rotating menu that's unique, creative, eclectic and guaranteed to satisfy any palate. Service is warm, professional, and efficient. The food, I would argue, is the best in the region. My wife and I live in Bozeman, and we've decided that McGill's is the best restaurant we've been to in a very long time. We have yet to find anyone in Western Montana who can rival the culinary magic that comes out of McGill's kitchen. We tip our hats to everyone at McGill's - you guys are incredible! If the meatloaf is on the menu, and you're a meatloaf person, GET IT. this will likely be a spiritual experience for you. :-) While it's great to just pop in for a meal, don't miss the magic of a horseback ride in the summer or a genuinely memorable sleigh ride in the winter. 320 Guest Ranch is a special place, and once you've been here, you'll want to keep coming back.
